Visit Notes

Sunday, 11th April 2010

If you go looking for this barrow you're likely to think that you won't be able to get to it - I certainly nearly gave up on it. This is because the area around it is covered in 2m high gorse bushes (bushes? trees!) I started to head for the next barrow when I saw that the gorse jungle actually dipped in on the east side towards where the barrow is.

Tucked away in the corner, lightly covered in gorse (that had recently been burned off at the time of this visit I found the barrow. It's quite large, some 15m across with a very shallow ditch surrounding it. The high gorse bushes around it and the burnt gorse bushes on the barrow make it difficult to appreciate properly. As the gorse bushes to the south form the edge of the golf course I can't see these being cleared, but at least the burning off of the gorse on the barrow does indicate that some work to protect and preserve them is underway.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
