An Interesting, but Expensive Day

What can I say about today that will make it any better? Absolutely nothing!

I set of for Donegal full of great plans. I had figured that this could be the last good weekend of the year and so the long overdue trip to Donegal was called for. "Let's get some Donegal sites on megalithomania.", thinks I.

At Beltany stone circle my camera and tripod was blown over and my digital camera rendered useless. Completely knackered! This put a stop to seeing a lot of 'lesser' sites, because I know just had my film cameras to take pictures with, and so I decided 'sculptural' was my keyword for the day. So, off to Gortnavern and Kilclooney More portal tombs it had to be.

At Kilclooney More I realised that I'd lost my mobile phone somewere too! What a day.

An Analogue Day

Seriously lacking my digital camera (now in for repair) I decided that I would be very selective in the sites I visited today.

I also decided to revisit some sites to take some 'proper' photographs where I'd previously only snapped them with the digital camera. This is because I have someone interested in images of these sites.

The weather was blissfully cold and refreshing, and wonderfully sunny - too sunny at times for good pictures, but you can't complain at this time of year!

A Frosty, Pointy Morning

I had intended two trips today. The first one was to Punchestown standing stone to get some early morning photos - I always seem to have visited it in the late afternoon. This trip I managed to do and it was a lovely frosty morning. The sun was in and out throughout my stay there, changing the appearance of the huge monolith ever few minutes. The frosty grass also threw a spectacularly mystical light around the stone - at one time it looked as if the stone was standing on a sea of mini rainbows.

The second trip was to be one of bullaun hunting around Kilkenny, but it turned out that the times for a party my daughter was going to were different than I'd thought, so there was not enough time for this one. I'll do it next weekend instead and try to get across to see Knockroe (County Kilkenny) again too.

A Kildare Blow-Out

A tyre blow-out at 70mph that is! What a start to the day. Luckily it was my rear tyre, so I suffered no horrible loss of control or car flipping. With the camera and phone loss, it does make November my most expensive megalithing month so far though!

What was nice was being able to see Old Kilcullen (County Kildare) seated quite beautifully from the place I put the spare wheel on to the car. Uta, my wife, managed to drag a lovely bloke, Pete, out on a Sunday to open his tyre garage and replace it for me (I wasn't going to drive around on that horrible space saver wheel!)

After that I managed a few of sites, some old - some new, and finished the day off watching the sun set at Knockroe (County Kilkenny). A truly wonderful way to do so and I now feel much better about the place than I did after my first visit, but more on that later.
